Hofjes and gasthuizen

Often, the word hofjes is translated into almshouses, but that is incorrect. Hofjes are unique to the Netherlands, especially to the old county of Holland. Hofjes are complexes of houses, often built in classical style around an inner garden or court yard. The initiative to build them was often taken by wealthy citizens in order to house the poor and old people of the city. Leiden still has 35 of these hofjes, that nowadays seem to be green and peaceful oases in a hectic city.

Gasthuizen (guest houses) are the old hospitals of the town, often run by the church. One of them, the Elizabeth Gasthuis, is still a nursing home.
