Singels

Singels are typical for many towns in Holland, Utrecht and Gelria. They are star-shaped canals surrounding the old city. They were used, together with gates and walls, to defend the city against intruders. In the 19th century they lost their function. The walls and gates were often demolished and the singels were converted into green housing quarters. Leiden's singels are completely intact.
